The City of Cyclists
I believe it’s obvious by now how beneficial cycling is and with all the information available today on this topic, I’m convinced that we all at least thought about changing our lifestyle into one that involves riding the bike more often than we did before.
I am very impressed by this great city, called the “city of cyclists”; if you haven’t guessed what city I’m talking about, it’s Copenhagen.
People in Copenhagen take things seriously when it comes to riding the bike.
Around 52 percent of all Copenhageners commute by bike on a daily basis and they have the busiest cycle lane in the world, therefore no wonder that cities around the
world are talking about following their example when they try to increase usage of this CO2 friendly means of transportation.
More than one third of the population in Copenhagen commute by bike on daily basis. Copenhagen has more than 300 kilometers of cycling lanes and an additional 50 kilometers are on the way. The International Cycling Union, UCI, appointed Copenhagen to be the first official Bike City in the world from 2008-2011.
Although cycling is the cheapest mean of transportation next to walking of course, Copenhageners love their bikes regardless their financial income. Most middle class families with kids in Copenhagen don't even own a car as they choose to ride their bikes to commute to work, bringing the kids to kindergarten, run errands... In fact 25 percent of all families with two kids in Copenhagen own a cargo bike.
It may come as a surprise, but even top politicians ride their bike every day to parliament. A majority (63 %) of the members of the Danish parliament commute to work by bike every day.
When visiting Copenhagen for the first time, the amount of bicycles on the streets can be quite overwhelming. However you will soon realize, that life in Copenhagen
is based on bicycles as a very important means of transportation.
The city's infrastructure is built on the fact that a bicycle is not only the cheapest, healthiest and fastest way to get around the city, but it is also a very
important factor in reducing carbon emissions. Therefore bicycle culture is a vital part of the city’s administration ambition in order to become the first carbon neutral
capital in the world by 2025.
As more than one third of the population in Copenhagen commute by bike daily, cities around the world are being inspired by Copenhagen’s passion for bikes and are
motivated to increase the usage of bicycles as means of transportation.
There are multiple reasons to promote cycling: bikers can save up money, get the great exercise, spare the environment for CO2 emission, etc.
Copenhagen’s amazing goal for 2015 is that 50% of all those who work in Copenhagen will commute by bike according to the City of Copenhagen's environmental plan. ECO-METROPOLE OUR VISION 2015 together with other green initiatives, work hard towards making Copenhagen the greatest city of cyclists in the world.
Now, around the world, “Copenhagenizing” has become a phenomenon in the process of getting more and more people to leave their car and ride a bike.
