Cycling Vs. Running
Have you ever wondered which one would be better for you: cycling or running?
Let’s figure out which one has the most advantages and why…
1. If you want to get fit fast:
Cycling - Just like at school, you develop staying power on the local bike. According to Matt Parker, coach at British Cycling "Cycling's low impact, so you keep going longer. It's sustained stamina training.
Running - It will not max stamina as quickly for one quite important reason: because it hurts. According to Nick Grantham - English Institute of Sport: "Running leads to muscle soreness and damage. It's no wonder cyclists keep going for longer."
So, it seems that cycling wins this one.
2. If you are looking to build muscle
Cycling – As reported by Matt Parker "Cycling power is generated by glutes, quads and hamstrings. So you'll see gains in leg bulk."
Running - "You can't bulk up by running, even with hill training," stated Grantham. Actually, you would have to be insane to try. Running spreads strain throughout your body.
Well, as it appears, cycling wins this one, too.
3. If interested to lose your gut
Cycling - Calories burnt by 10 minutes of cycling: 97.
You are sitting down, after all. According to Grantham "If you're not supporting your weight, you simply aren't going to be working as hard.”
Running - Only 14.2 minutes on a treadmill will burn 200 calories. As it turns out it took 27 minutes on a bike according to the Centre for Sports Science and Health study.
Running wins this one, however it’s debatable by some…
4. If you want to stay off crutches
Cycling – The number of Injuries per 1000 hours: 6.
You'll crash only once every 900,000 miles. "Ensure your legs can't fully straighten to minimize injuries," stated Parker. Sticking to this rule off the bike is amusing but unnecessary.
Running – The number of injuries per 1000 hours: 11.
According to Harley Street podiatrist Simon Costain "Shockwaves compress your vertebrae". That’s why marathon runners shrink by a centimeter during a race. Temporary, but still not a good thing - especially if you're already short.
Who’s the winner now? Cycling, of course.
Well, there you have it, now it’s your call to decide. However, I’d say it’s time to get your bike and ride on!
