Birthday Party on Bikes
Since it seems that the birthdays aren’t at-home events anymore, planning my 10 years old kid a birthday party is definitely not an easy job (for you and your wallet). There has to be a way to bring an old-school element back to birthday parties (ie: less cost, more nature) that still gives today’s kids the fun and excitement they’ve come to expect at the event.
As we all agree a successful birthday party needs to have:
- a great and original party place (not necessary indoor if the weather allows it)
- fun for everybody
- plenty of age appropriate activities
- party favors for everybody
- healthy but also appreciated food by the invited crowd (not by their parents)
- a happy crowd ready for adventure
My challenged almost came to an end when I realized that we have to use their passion and exploit it on the event day. Since my boy just loves his bike and would like to do everything with it, I supposed that many of his best friends are the same, so, why not plan his birthday party in a bicycle friendly national park in the nearby.

But before taking this idea in front of him I had to make it as great as possible, so I started planning some details:
1. The place. As I told you before, the place was chosen to be a nearby park with biking paths. The place has a great spot for picnic and a few different ones with outdoor playgrounds.
2. The crowd. Ha ha .. this is not my responsibility and the birthday guy will have to assure that all his friends knows cycling. And if there will be some exceptions, I will take care of them and involve them to arbitrate the games.
3. The invitations. They will be designed using the bicycling birthday party theme and will have to mention the requirements of bringing bikes and helmets.
4. The games. For some ideas of funny games on bikes, please visit here and here. A bike scavenger hunt will be planned in advance and appropriate signs will be placed for their orientation. Another funny game will be riding bikes in pairs holding long wire threads. The bike parade: Kids will decorate their bikes by putting fallen leaves, baseball cards, colored masking tape or colorful straws (with vertical slits cut in) on the spokes. Lead a “parade” around your neighborhood’s bicycles tracks.
5. The food. This will have to be planned and brought there in advance, so will have to be all small bites and picnic kind of food. Since they all love pizza, small bite-size pizza is a must in the menu, like the fruits on the sticks dipped in melted chocolate (brought there in a thermos).
6. The party favors. I just love the idea of personalizing their own bike with a license plate. This can be a homemade plate created from cardboard and zip-tied into place by the handlebars. Or you can try contacting your local bike racing group and ask them to print some personalized license plates for the kids. Put everything in a bicycle basket personalized for each child and you’ll make a memorable event.

But, of course, the birthday boy needs not only to approve the ideas behind his birthday party, but to love them, because I want it to be fun and memorable.
