Bicycle Sharing Systems
The mission to get more people on bikes started a fashion trend. Yellow Bike Project is a volunteer powered community bike shop that repairs and transforms donated bicycles into functional bikes, complete with a shiny coat of yellow paint.
This is a community resource by offering volunteers free instruction in bicycle mechanics, and refurbishing old bikes and parts.
More and more old bikes are brought to life and enjoyed by young people. They look interesting and they bring color and happiness to those who ride or see them around San Francisco, or any other place the project works.
There are more bicycle sharing systems around the world. They can be divided into two general categories: "Community Bike programmes" organised mostly by local community groups or non-profit organisations; and "Smart Bike programmes" implemented by government agencies, sometimes in a public-private partnership.
The idea behind these systems is to provide free or affordable access to bicycles for short-distance trips in an urban area as an alternative to motorised public transport or private vehicles, thereby reducing traffic congestion, noise, and air pollution.
Bicycle sharing systems have also been cited as a way to solve the "last mile" problem and connect users to public transit networks.
Let’s hope that the concept will indeed bring more people on bikes to enjoy the beauty around them.
